: John Montefiore:
John Montefiore was born in Sydney, 1936. From 1946 to 1953 he attended Cranbrook School Sydney where he studied painting with Justin O’Brien. From 1954 to 1958 he studied at the National Art School, Sydney. In 1964 John won the NSW Travelling Art Scholarship. He was based in London for three years where he worked at the Byam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing. During extended breaks he visited all the major European galleries. When he returned from Europe in 1968 he taught at the National Art School, Newcastle, afterwards joining the academic staff of the Hunter Institute of Higher Education, which soon became part of the University of Newcastle. John has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions between 1961 and 2007. His commissions include Altarpiece St Nicholas Chapel in Christ Church Cathedral, the Mural for the Concert Hall in the Refurbished City Hall both in Newcastle and three Stained Glass windows installed for the 1983 Centenary celebrations in All Saints Anglican Church Kempsey NSW. John has traveled extensively; for his study leave in 1985 he worked in New York. In 1993 he won the Sulman Prize with his Life Series painting, a large multi-panelled work he had developed over many years. (Life Series is now installed in the new Commerce Building of Macquarie University.) His previous publications include the illustrations to the narrative poem The Fishing Boy, by Norman Talbot (published South Head Press 1973) and the illustrations to the book of poetry, Inner Confines ( a Newcastle College of Advanced Education Education Publication, 1976). John retired from his University position in 1997 and since then pursues a full-time career in painting. He currently exhibits at Artarmon Galleries, Sydney.
