John Brackenreg knew Jean Appleton from the Sydney Art School days (c.1926) and Artarmon Galleries has continued that friendship with Jean over the years. When she returned from UK Jean lived at Pymble where she spent time working out her overseas inspiration until an opportunity arose to purchase Alfred Cook’s home and studio at Moss Vale.

The Australian landscape is a distinct form yet it can provide any number of landscape memories. This melded with Jean’s artistic spirit and her work at ‘Windhover’ took on a contrasting aspect - as seen in the range of her work. It could be suggested that artists subconsciously search for landscape compatibility and the southern highlands with its various surprises matched Jean’s outlook and palette.

‘Windhover’ Moss Vale became a favourite haven to paint in. This current exhibition ‘From the Studio’ features landscapes in oil, watercolour and pastel, line drawings, screen prints as well as several still life interiors and two early nudes.
