: Clem Millward :

: Biography :

Artist Clem Millward’s major exhibition during September 2004 once again reflects the aesthetic of the Australian bush with Clem’s unique vibrancy of colour on his richly painted canvas surfaces.

During the 1950s Clem studied fine art in Romania for four years. Clem then won the prestigious Wynne Prize in 1973 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales whilst still teaching art in technical educational colleges.

He retired from teaching in 1985 and began to pursue the development of his own work on a full time basis. Clem was now free to paint and journeyed to China in 1995 where he spent three months painting and lecturing in the North West Xinjiang Province. He taught art and experienced a similar landscape to that of Australia.

Clem’s current exhibition is not to be missed as his deep commitment to the Australian landscape is even more intense for this exhibition. His skilful handling of the paint surface depict reality as well as the artist’s mind’s eyeview. This allows us also to contemplate and be reminded of our contemporary Australian wilderness - travelled, or imagined.
